The Tenant Assistance Project (TAP) has recognized Woods Aitken LLP as Firm Partner of the Month for March 2023. As TAP Firm Partner, Woods Aitken will have at least one attorney volunteer at TAP each week during the month of March.
“We are honored to be named TAP Firm Partner of the Month for March 2023,” said Audrey Svane, partner at Woods Aitken. “As a TAP volunteer, I’ve seen firsthand how crucial it is for tenants faced with eviction to have access to legal representation in order to prepare a valid defense."
In 2022, TAP helped more than 2,400 families in Nebraska and roughly half of those families had minor children. Woods Aitken’s commitment to TAP helped 45 families in 2022. As TAP Firm Partner for March 2023, Woods Aitken will likely help six more families.
“Without the assistance of attorney volunteers, it is very unlikely that tenants will have adequate representation to raise and argue valid legal defenses,” Svane said. “Even though the time commitment is small, I feel like the time I spend helping out at TAP really is making a difference in my community and in the lives of the clients I have had the privilege to assist.”
Launched in 2020, TAP is a homelessness prevention project that mobilizes pro bono attorneys and law students to provide free legal services to unrepresented low-income tenants who appear for their eviction hearings at the Douglas and Lancaster County Courthouses.
